Police operatives in Kwara State have intercepted a commercial vehicle in Ilorin and recovered two serviceable AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 42 rounds of live ammunition, leading to the discovery of a suspected gun-running network.
The interception was carried out during a stop-and-search operation along the Alapa–Okolowo axis of Ilorin, where the firearms and ammunition were found inside a bag in the vehicle.
The police said a 30-year-old suspect, Umaru M., initially denied ownership of the bag but later admitted to conveying the weapons and ammunition.
According to the Command, further investigation led to a breakthrough as the suspect allegedly disclosed that the firearms were given to him by one Dan Yarubawa for onward delivery to another individual identified as Dahiru outside Kwara State.
The police said efforts had been intensified to arrest the other suspects and establish the full extent of the alleged gun-running network.
The development was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo.
The Command said the operation was in line with the strategic policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which emphasises proactive and intelligence-led operations to prevent and disrupt criminal activities.
CP Ojo assured residents that the Command would continue to take proactive measures to protect lives and property across the state.
He also urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to the police, stressing that public cooperation remained crucial to sustaining security operations in Kwara.
