5 die after consuming fertiliser-laced soup in Sokoto
Five people have died in Sokoto State after consuming soup in which fertiliser was mistakenly sprinkled instead of Monosodium Glutamate seasoning.
Seven family members consumed the soup out of which five died and two are battling for their lives at the Sokoto Specialist Hospital.
The victims consumed the soup on Thursday in Kaurar Wanke village, Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The State Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, confirmed the incident on Monday, saying officials of the ministry rushed the victims to hospital.
Asabe said three of the victims died on Friday while two died in her presence at the hospital on Sunday.
She added that two other members of the family who consumed the soup are receiving medication at the Specialist Hospital.
The commissioner advised people to keep all poisonous and chemical substances away from their kitchens and foodstuffs to avoid such incident.
A relation of the victims, Muhammad Abdullahi, thanked the commissioner for her intervention.
