300-Level female varsity student dies as fire razes hostel in Yobe

A female hostel of the Federal University Gashua, Yobe State has been gutted by fire on Saturday, destroying a complete block of 29 rooms accommodating about 301 students.
A 300-level student of Geography, Shamsiya Murtala, died in the inferno while three other students who sustained injuries were treated and discharged from the general hospital, Gashua.
The incident occurred in Saturday afternoon.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maimuna Waziri, expressed deep sympathy to the affected students and their families over the unfortunate incident and directed for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered the immediate closure of the University due to escalating of students unrest on campus.
A statement signed by the University’s Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, directed all students to vacate the campus with immediate effect and return to their homes untill further notice.
