Kano declares Monday work-free day to mourn 22 athletes 

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced Monday as a day of mourning following the death of 22 athletes who represented the state at the just concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The athletes died when their bus crashed about 50 kilometers to Kano. Several others were seriously injured.

The governor, who is on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia directed that Monday, 2nd June 2025, be observed as work-free day to mourn the victims and pray for them.

He sympathised with their families and described the tragedy as a dark moment for the entire state, calling for calm and unity during this difficult period.

The governor assured that all necessary efforts are being made to support the injured victims and all the affected families.

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief.” Yusuf said in a statement.
