Niger Governor Orders Closure Of IBB University
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has ordered the closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, with immediate effect.
A statement issued on Wednesday by Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the State Government, said the university will remain closed till further notice.
“This decision comes in light of recent security breaches and the unfortunate loss of lives within the university community.
“The safety and security of all citizens, including the students, remain a top priority for the government.
“The Niger State government is deeply saddened by the recent incidents and measures are being taking to address the situation swiftly,” the statement added.
It urged the university community to remain vigilant, calm, and cooperate with the authorities during the period of the closure.
“The government is working diligently to restore order, ensure the safety of all citizens, and maintain peace within the state.”
The statement said efforts were on investigate the security breaches and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The government is resolute in its commitment to upholding law and order, as well as protecting the lives and property of all residents in Niger State,” it added.
The Syndicate reports that the action of the government followed protest by the students of the University following the killing of a student in the early hours of Monday during a suspected armed robbery incident at a students’ lodge in the Ndakikpabu area of Lapai.
The victim, identified as Jafar, was reportedly stabbed in the neck by the assailants around 2:30 a.m. and later died at the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was taken for treatment.
