Customs hand over 10,000 seized donkey genitals to NESREA

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), 10,000 donkey genitals seized from a 40-foot container along Kaduna–Abuja expressway. The NCS National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, made this known during a press conference and handing over of the donkey genitals, on Thursday in Abuja.

Maiwada said the donkey genitals were intercepted at about 9:00pm on June 5, following credible intelligence and a coordinated surveillance with the Special Wildlife Office and the Customs Intelligence Unit.

He stated that the seizure highlights the persistent threat of illegal wildlife trafficking through Nigeria’s transport corridors.

“The seizure is not an isolated case,” he said, explaining that in the past 12 months, the Customs Service had disrupted several illicit wildlife trafficking operations nationwide.

“These include the rescue of African Grey Parrots, pangolins, monkeys, tortoises, and the seizure of taxidermy specimens such as lion mounts, zebra hides, and pangolin scales,”

Maiwada said in Ikom, Cross River State, they confiscated hundreds of parrot, eagle, and hornbill heads, while they rescued 120 African Grey Parrots in Adamawa State.

He warned that the scale and profitability of the illegal wildlife trade has continued to pose ecological and national security threats, because of its link with organised criminals involved in money laundering, arms smuggling, and illicit currency dealings.
