Kano governor transmits same-sex bill prohibition to Assembly
Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has transmitted a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage and other practices deemed immoral in the state.
This is contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the governor, Malam Sunusi Bature in Kano.
Bature said the governor gave the approval for the bill while presiding over the 31st Executive Council meeting at the Government House Annex, Kwankwasiyya City,Kano.
He quoted Yusuf as saying that his administration would not compromise the values and teachings of Islam, stressing that Kano must continue to uphold its cultural and religious heritage.
Yusuf said that the bill specifically prohibited same-sex marriage as well as practices locally referred to as Madigo(Lesbianism) and Luwadi(Homosexuality) which the government considered forbidden.
“Under no circumstances will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano. This government is duty-bound to protect the moral integrity of our society,” the governor said.
He said that once passed law by the State House of Assembly and assented to by the governor, individuals found guilty of engaging in or promoting same-sex marriage and related practices would face strict legal consequences.
Yusuf expressed confidence that lawmakers would treat the bill with urgency, given its importance to the moral and social wellbeing of the state.
