TETFund Boosts ABU Campus Mobility With 20 Solar-Powered Tricycles
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has provided 20 solar-powered electric tricycles to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in a major step towards improving campus transportation and promoting sustainable energy innovation in Nigerian higher institutions.
According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, who confirmed the development during the 555th Regular Senate Meeting held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, the intervention demonstrates TETFund’s commitment to supporting innovation and environmental sustainability within the education sector.
Each of the tricycles is powered by a six-kilowatt lithium-ion battery enhanced with solar panels, capable of covering between 130 and 150 kilometres on a single charge.
Professor Ahmed expressed appreciation to TETFund for the gesture, noting that it would significantly enhance mobility for both students and staff across the university’s extensive campus.
He also recalled that ABU had earlier received 20 units of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles from the Federal Government as part of efforts to promote cleaner and more efficient transportation systems within the institution.
The newly supplied solar-powered tricycles will commence operations once a dedicated charging station, to be installed by IRS Green Energy Limited, the contracting firm is completed.
