Aromonlaran community tasks Oyo Govt to restore speed bumps on Old Ife Road, Ibadan
The Aromonlaran Muslim Community in Ibadan, has tasked the Oyo State Government to restore speed bumps on Odejayi–Aromonlaran axis of the Gate–Sawmill, Old Ife Road in Ibadan, to curtail reckless driving by road users.
Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, a member of the community stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
Agunbiade said that the absence of the bumps on the road had resulted in recurring accidents, claiming four lives within the last two years.
“Several fatal accidents have been recorded on this stretch, including the tragic death of a Loyola College student earlier this year. Following the incident, the government installed a speed bump in front of the school to curb overspeeding.
“However, during the visit of President Bola Tinubu to the coronation of Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, the newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, the speed bump was removed to allow unhindered passage for the presidential convoy.
“It has not been replaced since then, leaving pedestrians vulnerable.
“On December 1st, 2025, another severe accident occurred when Imam Sobur Owolabi Opeyemi, the Imam of Aromonlaran Muslim Community, was struck by a motorcycle while crossing the road to his residence,” he said.
Agunbiade said that Opeyemi was unconscious for some time, before regaining stability, further amplifying the urgent need for immediate safety intervention.
“This road has become a danger zone for our people. We cannot continue to witness preventable deaths. We appeal to the Oyo State Government to restore the speed bump and implement lasting safety measures to protect lives.
“The community is therefore calling on His Excellency, Gov. Seyi Makinde, and relevant state authorities to urgently reinstall speed bumps, enforce speed limits, and introduce additional traffic-calming measures along the affected road.
“The Aromonlaran Muslim Community emphasises that safeguarding human life must remain a top priority and urges swift government intervention to prevent further tragedies,” he said.
