ELIP-Initiative Hails N2bn Outstanding Gratuity, Death Benefits Payment In Jigawa

The Exceptional Leadership and Integrity Promotions Initiative (ELIP-Initiative) has commended the payment of about N2 billion outstanding gratuity and death benefits of all retirees in Jigawa State.
The organisation described the payment as “a significant and commendable step”, which would provide steady income and prevent unnecessary hardship on retirees.
This was contained in a statement signed by Executive Director of the organisation, Comrade Isah Mustapha, made available to The Syndicate in Dutse
The ELIP-Initiative said Governor Umar Namadi’s approval of the payment should also include immediately enrolment of verified retirees into the monthly pension payroll upon retirement, even while their gratuity is being processed.
It advised the state pension organisation to revive sensitisation and support programmes to better prepare civil servants for life after service, including financial planning and enterprise development.
The Syndicate reports that the N2 billion outstanding retirement and death benefits was paid to more than 720 retirees.
“ELIP-Initiative also acknowledged the Namadi administration for providing financial bailouts on two occasions and undertaking a critical review of the pension law aimed at strengthening the scheme for long-term sustainability.
“These efforts demonstrate the government’s tangible commitment to the welfare of retirees and families of deceased workers.”
It, however, noted that persistent structural challenges within the pension system have long subjected beneficiaries to socio-economic difficulties, lamenting that delays, sometimes lasting up to a year between retirement and receipt of benefits, had pushed many retirees into debt, trauma and worsening health conditions.
While reiterating its appreciation for the state government’s commitment, the organisation said the pension system should be reformed to make igawa state as a model for responsible and timely pension administration.
The ELIP-Initiative reaffirmed its dedication to promoting good governance, transparency and accountability in the state, with focus on public finance, budget tracking, climate action, and social inclusion for women, youth and persons with disabilities.
