Kano Governor Meets Tinubu Ahead of Defection To APC

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The high-level meeting with Tinubu was a source of relief to the governor’s supporters following weeks of political uncertainty that has left them in risky political dilemma after parting ways with his political godfather, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to sources, the president’s intervention has provided Governor Yusuf with sufficient reassurance to take another tentative step with plans to exit the NNPP.

The governor has thawed back on his defection, seeking assurances for a second term ticket in 2027 under the APC and other conditions.

However, the sources said Tinubu has advised the governor to consult locally and get the buy-in of key APC stakeholders in Kano to prevent internal crisis.

This caution comes amid lingering tensions within the Kano APC structure, particularly involving loyalists of the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and other influential figures with vested interests in the state’s political direction.

Reports indicate that the upbeat mood within the governor’s camp marks a sharp contrast to the uncertainty of the Kano APC hierarchy as to the fate of some of the key stakeholders in the party.

Also, as Governor Yusuf inches closer to the APC, his future still remains uncertain given the likelihood of internal dissent from within the APC and the huge Kwankwaso factor in Kano politics.
