Zamfara Govt to adopt Jigawa’s contributory pension scheme model
Zamfara State, is set to emulate the Jigawa State and Local Governments Contributory Pension Scheme.
Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, Public Relations Officer, Office of the Head of the Civil Service, Jigawa State, stated this in a statement on Wednesday in Dutse.
Dutse said that the Permanent Secretary, Establishment Matters, office of the Zamfara State Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Garba Aliyu, made this known during a study tour to Jigawa State Contributory Pension Scheme Board.
He quoted Aliyu as praising the Jigawa Pension Scheme, stating it is the best in the country, and expressed the intention of Zamfara State to learn from its 22 years of positive pension policy.
He said that the visit was directed by Gov.Dauda Lawan of Zamfara, who had already cleared over ₦13.5 billion in pension backlog and is committed to enhancing Zamfara’s pension system by adopting Jigawa’s model.
Responding, the Executive Secretary, Jigawa State and Local Governments Contributory Pension Scheme, Dr. Bilyaminu Shitu Aminu, said that the scheme, initiated in 2001, operated alongside the public service pensions funded directly by government revenues. Under this model, civil servants contribute 8% of their monthly basic salary, while the state contributes 17%.
He said that Gov. Umar Namadi prioritised pension reform upon taking office in May 2023, reflecting his commitment to improving civil servants’ welfare.
During their visit, the Zamfara delegation toured various departments of the scheme, receiving insights from departmental heads about its operations and activities.
