ELECTORAL REFORMS AND THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN RESULT MANAGEMENT
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken note of recent legislative deliberations concerning the framework for the conduct of future elections, particularly issues relating to the handling and movement of results from polling units.
As a professional body committed to democratic development, accountability, and public confidence in governance, the NUJ believes that clarity in electoral procedures is fundamental to national stability. Any ambiguity in the management of election outcomes risks eroding public trust and heightening tension within the polity.
Across Nigeria, citizens have consistently demanded reforms that guarantee openness and verifiability in the electoral process. Modern democracies are increasingly leveraging digital tools to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot and ensure that results reflect the will of the electorate without avoidable delays or uncertainties.
The Union maintains that the adoption of technology-driven mechanisms for the prompt relay of polling unit outcomes to designated collation platforms will significantly reduce suspicion, enhance transparency, and limit post-election disputes. A process that is clear, consistent, and technologically supported strengthens institutional credibility and reinforces democratic culture.
As lawmakers conclude their consultations and fine-tune legislative provisions ahead of the 2027 general elections, we urge them to prioritise measures that will inspire confidence among voters. The institutionalisation of clear and enforceable guidelines on the real-time transfer of election outcomes will demonstrate a commitment to credible and peaceful polls.
Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve, and reforms must reflect global best practices while responding to the aspirations of our people. Strengthening the framework for the management of election results will contribute meaningfully to political stability and deepen citizens’ faith in democratic governance.
The NUJ calls on all stakeholders to act in the national interest and ensure that the electoral architecture for forthcoming elections promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.
