MURIC urges respect for Chief Imam, calls for harmony between government, religious leaders

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has advised Oyo State Government, political parties, and politicians across the state on the need to accord due respect and consideration to the office and responsibilities of Chief Imams.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and General Secretary, Barr. Lawal Abduwaheed and Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade of its Oyo State Chapter on Sunday.
“The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, hereby issues this sensitization message to the Oyo State Government, political parties, and politicians across the state on the need to accord due respect and consideration to the office and responsibilities of Chief Imams.
“MURIC emphasizes that Chief Imams occupy highly revered positions as spiritual leaders, community guides, and custodians of Islamic teachings. Their roles are central to the moral and religious well-being of the Muslim community, and as such, they deserve to be treated with dignity and honour in all official engagements.
“In view of this, the organization respectfully urges all political actors and government officials to observe the following guidelines when planning events or inviting Chief Imams:
“Official programmes should not be scheduled on Fridays during Jumu’ah periods, in order to allow Imams adequate time to prepare for and observe their obligatory congregational prayers without conflict or pressure,” said.
MURIC added:”Adequate notice must be given prior to invitations. At least one week’s notice, accompanied by a formal and respectful invitation, should be extended to Chief Imams, except in unavoidable or special circumstances.
“The leadership and teaching responsibilities of Imams must be properly recognized. They should not be treated merely as ceremonial guests, but as respected religious authorities whose presence commands reverence.
“Appropriate arrangements should be made for their comfort, including separate serving provisions where necessary, in line with their religious observances and personal preferences.
“Dignified seating arrangements must also be ensured. Chief Imams should be seated in honourable positions, clearly separated from areas where alcohol is being served, in order to preserve the sanctity of their office and beliefs.”
MURIC reiterated that fostering mutual respect between political institutions and religious leaders was essential for strengthening social harmony, promoting peaceful coexistence, and building a truly inclusive and civil society.
The organization called on all stakeholders to work collectively towards honouring and supporting those who provide spiritual guidance and leadership within our communities.
