Hadejia Resistance Anniversary: Gov Namadi calls for preservation of history, heritage

Gov Umar Namadi on Saturday joined the Hadejia Emirate Council, led by the Emir of Hadejia, alongside other traditional rulers, dignitaries, and the people of the emirate, to commemorate the historic anniversary of Hadejia’s resistance against colonial invasion—an occasion he described as a vital bridge between the past and the future.
Held in Hadejia town, the event brought history to life through a series of momentous activities designed not only to remember but also to preserve and institutionalize the legacy of the emirate for generations to come.
Central to the celebration was the launch of a publication titled Hadejia Emirate: A Centenary History of Colonial Resistance and Transformation (1906–2026), unveiled at the School of Nursing auditorium.
The book chronicles over a century of resilience, leadership, and transformation, offering a detailed account of the emirate’s encounter with colonial forces and its enduring cultural identity.
In a further step toward safeguarding history, the governor participated in the commissioning of the newly established Hadejia Museum, a repository of artifacts, narratives, and historical records that reflect the rich heritage of the people and which stands as a permanent institution dedicated to preserving the memory of the past while educating future generations.
The celebration also featured a grand durbar procession around the emir’s palace, a vibrant cultural display that featured the emirate’s traditions and symbolized continuity between generations.
In his remarks, Namadi stressed that preserving history is not merely about documentation but about sustaining identity, values, and collective memory.
“This commemoration is a powerful reminder that history must be preserved, studied, and passed on. It is through such efforts that we maintain our identity and draw lessons that guide our present and future,” he said.
He noted that the newly launched book and the museum represent deliberate efforts to institutionalize historical knowledge, making it accessible to scholars, students, and the wider public.
According to him, these initiatives will play a critical role in deepening historical awareness and promoting cultural education across the state and beyond.
“From the review, the book is enriched with the historical heritage of the Hadejia Emirate. It is very, very important—not only for students of history but for all youth, not only in the Hadejia Emirate but across Jigawa State and Nigeria in general.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives that protect and promote history, particularly through education and public institutions, emphasising that younger generations must be connected to their roots through structured learning and exposure to historical materials.
“Because of the importance of this book, the Jigawa State Government will take deliberate steps to ensure its wide distribution. We will make sure that students of history in our senior secondary schools have access to copies of this book so they can benefit from its content.”
Namadi also commended the Emir of Hadejia for sustaining the emirate’s rich heritage and for championing initiatives that preserve its legacy, noting that traditional institutions remain vital custodians of history and culture.
“Today, we can all testify that His Royal Highness, the Emir of Hadejia—being a descendant of Muhammadu Mai Shahada—has continued in that tradition. He has upheld these values and remains committed and firm in serving his people.”
As part of his engagements in Hadejia, the governor attended an empowerment programme organised by the senator representing the Jigawa Northeast Senatorial Zone, further demonstrating the administration’s commitment to both heritage and socio-economic development.
