DELTA STATE GOVERNOR TO SPEAK ON DEMOCRACY AND RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM AT NUJ MEDIA ICON EVENT
All is now set for this year’s Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria, organized by the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
The event will honour seasoned and accomplished journalists whose contributions have significantly shaped Nigeria’s media landscape.
Governor Sheriff Francis Oborevwori of Delta State, who will be the Special Guest of Honour, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
The prestigious event, with the theme “Strenghtening Democracy Through Responsible Journalism and Good Governance,” will take place on November 7, 2026, at Abuja Continental Hotel.
In a statement, the Chairman of the National Organising Committee, Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, said this year’s event would attract distinguished media professionals and communication experts.
“For once, we want to celebrate ourselves. We are honouring colleagues who have paid their dues in journalism; acknowledge their courage, sacrifices, dedication, excellence and enduring contributions to the noble profession,” he explained.
According to Onayiga, “Milestone Recognition of Media Icons is in a class of its own. It is not one of those ‘awards.’ The event is NUJ’s unique way of appreciating and celebrating the service, resilience, sacrifice and integrity of the recipients over the years.”
He commended the National President of NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya and his team for continuing with the programme aimed at celebrating media icons in Nigeria during their lifetime, rather than doing so when they are no more.
The diverse profiles of the recipients reflect the depth of their experience, institutional knowledge and professional excellence. They are, indeed, shining stars who have excelled in the noble profession and inspired the younger ones.
The recipients include Chief Eric Teniola, Mallam Yusuf Nuhu, Olusegun Adeniyi, Chief Abia Onyike, Abdulkadir Ahmed Ibrahim, Ayo Adewuyi, HRM Oba Rotimi Obamuwagun, Mukhtar Gidado, Hajia Tabitha Sani Kangiwa, Ignatius Nwachukwu, Toro Oladapo and Franz Ndulue.
Others are Martins Oloja, Azubuike Ishiekwene, Kingsley Uranta, Olori Janet Mba Afolabi, Bayo Bodunrin, Uzoma Isiakpu, Adeyinka Amosu, Jubrin Bello Kwami, Ayinde Soaga, Sumna Sambo and Hajia Aisha Abdullahi Jao. ///
