Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka beats Jessica Pegula of the United States to win the 2024 US Open final played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

A visibly disappointed Pegula collects the runners-up trophy, and shares her thoughts after the match: “It has been an incredible month for me. I had a rought start to the year but was able to turn it around. After coming off such a hot summer, I didn’t expect it. Really grateful for the last few weeks of tennis and the incredible matches I was able to put together.

“I wish she would have at least let me take one set. She has been playing some amazing hardcourt tennis, if not the best hardcourt player in the world. She is not going to give you anything. I was happy to be able to fight back and stay in it. I hope to continue to get these opportunities.”

The American put on an impressive show in the first set, going toe-to-toe with the world number two to force her opponent to claim a difficult 7-5 opening set win.

She started to lose her way in the second set after going down 0-3, but then fought back fiercely to win five games on the trot.

But Sabalenka was able to dig deep and see out the match in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.

It is Sabalenka’s third Grand Slam title, the second this year, and her first US Open title.
