ABU to set up livestock research centre in Mahuta, Katsina State
The Katsina State Government has pledged full support for the establishment of an outreach center for the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, at Mahuta in Kafur Local Government Area of the state.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, received the letter of request from ABU Vice Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala.
Nasir, who stood in for Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, said government will take prompt action on the request.
“The proposed outreach centre would go along way in providing not only job opportunities for the teeming young men and women and the generality of farmers, but will become pivotal for Katsina and the north west states ,” he said.
“The centre would provide access and utilize the knowledge on advanced Animal husbandry that northern Nigeria require.”
He appreciated the Vice Chancellor for seeking to establish the center in the state, saying “this would give the students of Agriculture a place to learn and advance their knowledge and for the businessmen and women to utilize the opportunity to multiply their income.”
Earlier, the vice-chancellor, represented by Dr. Yunusa Mohammed Isiyaku, explained that the proposed centre followed a request submitted by a delegation led by the Danejin Katsina and District Head of Mahuta, Alhaji Bello Yammama.
“The objective of the outreach centre is to provide training and extension services to livestock farmers, and conduct on site research and demonstrations of improved Animal husbandry programmes and enhanced breeding practices, as well as genetic improvement of livestock,” Dr. Isiyaku stated.
According to him, establishing the outreach center in Mahuta will have direct and long term benefits on livestock farmers, the economy and agricultural sector of the state and beyond.
