Alleged N189bn Fraud: EFCC releases Tambuwal from detention

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, from detention.

The agency is investigating the Senator, who represents Sokoto South in the Senate, over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189 billion.

Though the EFCC has not made any public comment on his arrest and detention, sources said that the Senator was released on Tuesday.

Tambuwal, a member of the opposition, was a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and had served as Sokoto State governor for eight years.

He was arrested on Monday morning, detained and interrogated by the EFCC detectives at its headquarters in Abuja.

Tambuwal is said to be investigated for allegedly violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, when he served as governor.
