Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned what it called the horrific bandits attack on Layin Danauta, Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, Kaduna state on Friday, where 13 residents including children were killed.

“Our findings show that the gunmen that stormed the area on Friday around 4:00pm — went on rampage of atrocities, killing people, destroying properties and looting shops.

“The pattern of the latest attack shows all the atrocious hallmarks of the consistent years of attack on the people of Birnin Gwari LGA.

“Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom and frequent killings around parts of Birnin Gwari LGA have left people feeling more unsafe, showing utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and properties,” Amnesty said in a statement.

It said that the “stunning failure” of the authorities to end the killings and bring suspected perpetrators to justice have continued to be a threat to the right to life in Nigeria.

“The Nigerian authorities must focus on ending the violence in Birin Gwari — and bringing the actual suspected perpetrators to justice,” the organisation said.
