Benue Governor Announces 50% Subsidy On Fertilizer

Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has announced a 50% subsidy on fertilizer as the government commenced the sale of 600 truckloads of the commodity.

The Syndicate reports that the state government spent ₦16.8 billion to procure the fertiliser and other farm inputs.

“Our vision is to make agriculture the pride of Benue once again and to raise hundreds of millionaire farmers within the next two years,” the governor said while officially flagging off the 2025 Fertilizer Distribution on Wednesday in Makurdi.

“This year, we are releasing 600 truckloads of fertilizer worth ₦16.8 billion. With government’s 50% subsidy, our farmers will access fertilizer at just ₦22,500 per bag. In addition, we have finalized arrangements to settle over ₦5 billion owed to genuine fertilizer suppliers, after cleansing the system of fraudulent practices from the past.

“To enhance transparency and efficiency, all fertilizer sales will now be processed cashlessly through accredited POS terminals, ensuring that only genuine farmers benefit from our support. Furthermore, we have adopted a new agricultural calendar to guarantee timely access to inputs for both wet and dry seasons,” he added.

The governor said beyond the fertilizer distribution, the government is determined to change the story of agriculture in the state.

“Beginning in December, no orange will leave Benue in raw form. Our new fruit processing factory will add value to our produce, create jobs, and boost local wealth,” Alia said.
