Blackout in Kaduna as electricity firm sacks 900 employees
The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company has laid off 900 employees, prompting other workers to embark on an indefinite strike.
The situation has left consumers without electricity in Kaduna and three other states under its franchise.
The 900 affected workers were told to go by the company with a pledge to settle their net benefits and pension “in due course”.
The workers had in a statement on January 31, 2025, indicated that Kaduna Electric has paid only 10% of their supposed benefits.
Other workers on Monday shut the company and plunged state’s under its franchise in darkness.
The workers are asking for the implementation of new minimum wage, payment of promotion arrears, and about five years’ outstanding pension to retirees.
They also complained about inadequate work tools, failure to provide death benefits to the families of deceased staff members, improper placement of deserving employees, non-payment of electricity rebates and lack of recognition for long-serving employees.
