Bello Matawalle

President Bola Tinubu has directed Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to move to Kebbi State with immediate effect to coordinate the rescue of the 25 school girls abducted by terrorists on Monday.

The directive is coming shortly after the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, called out Tinubu on the handling of the security situation in the country asking him to relocate to Kebbi and other troubled areas, or give ways for those who can safeguard the country.

A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Presidential spokesman, said Matawalle who had handled similar situation when he served as Governor of Zamfara, is expected to utilise his experience in monitoring security efforts to secure the release of the abducted students.

Onanuga said Matawalle is expected to arrive in Birni-Kebbi on Friday.

On 26 February 2021, armed bandits abducted 279 female students aged between 10 and 17 at the Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe, in Zamfara State, and the  hostages were released on 2 March 2021.
