Corps Marshal Orders Immediate Prosecution of Motorists Over Death of 5 FRSC Personnel
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has ordered the immediate prosecution of some motorists who knocked down and killed five Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel while on official duty.
The incidents occured in Ekiti, Ogun, Taraba, Plateau, and Enugu states, a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said on Tuesday.
According to him, the incidents occured in Ekiti Sector Command on September 6; Ogun Sector Command, September 8; Taraba Sector Command, September 15; Jos By-Pass Unit Command in Plateau, September 19; and Obollo Afor Unit Command in Enugu state on September 24.
“In line with this, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed has directed that all motorists responsible for these tragic incidents be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, to serve as a deterrent against future occurrences.
“Their deaths are not mere statistics, they represent human lives dedicated fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and breadwinners, cut short in the line of duty while safeguarding Nigerian roads,” the statement added.
The Corps Marshal noted with great concern the increasing hazards faced by FRSC operatives who, beyond being exposed to speeding vehicles, now also contend with kidnapping, violent attacks, and targeted assaults.
He therefore stressed that the FRSC will no longer tolerate acts of recklessness that endanger its staff, warning that offenders will be made to face the full weight of the law.
Mohammed called on personnel across formations nationwide to exercise more level of alertness and prioritise their safety in the discharge of their duties.
“In line with this, the Corps is intensifying engagements with relevant authorities on the protection of its personnel and installations. This measure is not intended for aggression but as a safeguard to deter assaults and ensure that officers can perform their duties without fear of attack.”
The Corps Marshal, on behalf of the management and staff, commiserated with the families of the deceased officers and saluted their courage and sacrifice.
He called on all Nigerians to honour their memory by respecting traffic laws, showing regard for FRSC operatives on duty, and supporting the Corps in its mandate to end avoidable deaths on the nation’s highways.
The Corps Marshal said the incidents would not deter the FRSC in ensuring that any disregard of traffic laws and the safety of FRSC personnel attract serious sanctions and legal consequences.
