Coup: Benin Republic President safe, army regaining control

Benin’s President Patrice Talon is safe and the army is regaining control, after a group of soldiers said they had ousted him from power, the presidency told AFP on Sunday.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television,” his office said. “The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure.”

Some soldiers had announced ‘removing President Talon from office’ on Sunday morning.

The military personnel announced that they had ousted President Patrice Talon, who is due to step down next April after 10 years in power.

The soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), made the announcement on state television.

There was gunfire near the president’s official residence at the time of the coup announcement.
