Court judgement on National Convention, an assault on democracy – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is appalled by the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja, presided over by Justice Kolawole Omotosho, ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise the outcome of party’s National Convention slated for November.
The party in a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the court judgement “as an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.”
According to the statement, the judgement runs counter to the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which affirms the supremacy of a political party in the management of its internal affairs.
The PDP said even though that the judgment of the court did not vitiate its ability to proceed with the processes and activities towards the National Convention, it has directed its lawyers “to take immediate action to appeal this judgment in our unwavering determination to uphold, defend and promote multi-party democracy in our country.”
The PDP charged all party members, Chapter and Organs to remain steadfast and focus on preparations for the national convention.
