The Ibrahim Gaidam Ultra-Modern Market in Damaturu is rapidly transforming into a bustling commercial hub, attracting hundreds of traders following a direct appeal from the Yobe State Government to the business community.
Bulama Alhaji Larema, the market’s General Manager, confirmed the remarkable surge in patronage during an interview in his office.
He hailed the state-of-the-art facility as one of the most beautiful and well-structured in Northern Nigeria.
“As you move around, you can see the activity yourself: the red brick shops, the temporary stalls, the truck pushers—everyone is busy. Many people have truly responded, and I’m sincerely grateful for his efforts in constructing such a befitting market.”
While highlighting the market’s key advantages, including affordability and robust security, he noted that Governor Mai Mala Buni has ensured it offers some of the cheapest rent rates in the state.
“Security is another significant advantage. Since operations began, there has not been a single reported case of theft or vandalism,” Larema said.
“The market is protected by adequate security personnel, supplemented by a community network where traders themselves assist in maintaining vigilance.”
Beyond security, the market is equipped with modern amenities to support business growth, including an efficient water system that pumps over 80,000 litres daily.
Addressing the initial hesitation by some traders to relocate to the market, Larema pointed out that Damaturu fish sellers who were the earliest to move, gave a positive testament of the new market’s potential.
“Sometimes, when people are used to a particular place, they fear that moving might make them lose customers, but the fish sellers all relocated here, and now everyone looking for fresh fish comes here directly. That shows the level of patronage this new market is already attracting.”
He said the new market initiative is part of the state government’s broader mission to improve livelihoods and promote commerce as the region recovers from years of insurgency.
Larema concluded with an appeal to the public: “We encourage everyone in Damaturu Metropolis and across Yobe State to make good use of this first-class facility.”
