ECOWAS Parliament Elects First Female Speaker

The ECOWAS Parliament on Thursday elected Memounatou Ibrahima from Togo as the Speaker of the regional body.
Memounatou, elected during the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session of the Parliament sitting in Kano, is the first female speaker of the parliament.

She was the third Deputy Speaker of the parliament, and was a member of the body since 2021.

Before her emergence, Senator Barau Jibrin, the First Deputy Speaker, acted as Speaker of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, inaugurated on April 4, 2024.
