FG releases N50bn varsities workers withheld allowances

 The Federal Government has released N50 billion withheld allowances of academic and non-academic staff of federal, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, has said.
The Minister said in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, on Wednesday that the money was released in fulfilment of a promise made by President Bola Tinubu to the universities workers.

The Syndicate reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Non-academic Staff Union, and  Senior Staff Association of federal universities had variously embarked on strike over the withheld allowances.

The government said the release of the allowances would avert further strikes and keep students in school.

“Keeping our children in school is not negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past,” the minister stated.
