FG To Spend N1 Trillion On Kano Metropolitan Rail Project
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday, said the Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion rail line in Kano metropolis to overhaul the city’s transport service and enhance the economy of the state.
The governor said when he addressed members of the state’s contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State, that the rail project is designed to provide modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system that will connect key districts across the city.
He said the initiative would significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility for residents, facilitate trade and attract fresh investments into the state.
Governor Yusuf described the project as a landmark federal intervention that would reposition Kano as a major transportation and commercial hub in Northern Nigeria.
He also linked the approval to his administration’s recent realignment with the Federal Government after he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the move was strategic and aimed at attracting critical development projects to the state.
“Our decision was guided by the need to fast-track development and secure major interventions that will have direct impact on the lives of our people,” the governor said.
He assured that the state government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent and timely execution of the project.
While expressing appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the rail service, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complementing federal initiatives through supportive policies and infrastructure development.
The Syndicate reports that the Federal Government, in addition to the N1 trillion for Kano Metropolitan Rail Service project, also provided additional N150 billion in the 2026 budget for the Kano light rail project, part of a broader N250 billion funding commitment for light rail projects in Kano and Kaduna.
The Kano-Maradi railway project, valued at $1.9 billion, is also expected to be completed by 2026.
