Fire Displaces 150 Yobe Varsity Female Students

A fire outbreak has razed a female hostel at Yobe State University (YSU) on Tuesday night, destroying a complete block accommodating about 150 students.
The Syndicate gathered that some of the affected students were rushed to hospitals in Damaturu, the state capital, for treatment.
The Information unit of University, said in a statement by Abdulmumin Kolo Gulani, that the fire which started at about 7:00pm, was put out by firemen of the university and the State Fire Service.
He said, “All the students were evacuated safely and there was no mortality arising from the fire. Some students were, however, affected by the trauma of the incidence and briefly got admitted at the Yobe State University Clinic and Yobe State Specialist Hospital Damaturu as directed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mala Mohammed Daura.”
“The cause of the incident is yet to ascertained, however, the building was completely destroyed as a result of the conflagration.”
Kolo Gulani added that the Vice-Chancellor has been working with both the Security Division and Fire Service of the University to ascertain the cause of the disaster and take measures to avert a reoccurrence.
Meanwhile, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has commiserated with the management and students of the university over the incident.
Gov. Buni, in a statement by his Director General, Press Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, said the fire disaster was an unfortunate and sad incident, but expressed gratitude that no life was lost.
“We remain grateful that in spite of the huge fire that razed the hostel completely, no life was lost.”
“SEMA is hereby directed to provide food, clothing, and beddings while government looks for alternative accomodation for the female students,” he added.
The governor charged the students and people of the state to be vigilant and avoid actions that would lead to such incident.
He said the government would look into the remote and immediate causes of the fire disaster, to guard against future occurance.
