Flood: Zulum seeks World Bank support to dredge Alau Dam, reconstruct bridges

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has called on the World Bank to assist in dredging of Alau Dam and the reconstruction of bridges destroyed by the recent flooding in the state.
A statement by Dauda Iliya, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, said Zulum made the request when the World Bank Country Director, Dr. Ndiame Diop, paid him a courtesy visit in Maiduguri.
He highlighted impacts of the devastation, which include the destruction of critical infrastructure and farms, and blockage of waterways.
“Flooding has significantly affected our farmers,” he told the World Bank team, and called for comprehensive intervention to tackle the situation.
“Without comprehensive dredging, we cannot solve this problem. We need increased support to address these challenges,” he added.
The governor said that the challenges caused by the flooding came as the state battles with the extensive damage caused by Boko Haram insurgency, which has resulted in over $6 billion in infrastructure losses.
“Out of the $6.9 billion losses incurred across the Northeast, Borno accounts for about two-thirds.
“The insurgency destroyed critical infrastructure and disrupted livelihoods, but with support from the World Bank and other partners, we are rebuilding.” he said.
Zulum also urged the World Bank to expedite the implementation of the Health Resilience Project meant to strengthen healthcare services and well-being of residents.
Earlier, the World Bank Country Director, had commended Borno State Government for the achievements being recorded in education and post-insurgency recovery efforts.
He pledged sustained World Bank support to enhance development across key sectors.
“We have observed significant progress in technical education and infrastructure rehabilitation. Borno’s recovery efforts are commendable, and we are happy to support these initiatives,” Dr. Diop stated.
