By Muhammad Maitela, Damaturu

Yobe State Government says it is working with security agencies to check the activities of smugglers mopping up grains in markets across the state.

The step is part of measures being taken by the government to check rising food prices and reduce the harsh economic burden on citizens.

A communique issued after an emergency meeting on Saturday in Damaturu on food security in the state, chaired by Governor Mai Mala Buni, said that the state government has also taken other measures to check bulk purchases of foodstuffs from markets in the state.

The meeting expressed deep concern over the hoarding of grains and other essential commodities by some unpatriotic persons to create artificial scarcity and impose more hardship on the people.

It assured that the government would soon roll out more concrete measures to cushion the effects of the rising cost of foodstuffs and other essential commodities.

The government directed the 17 local councils to hold similar stakeholders meeting
and engagement to ensure full implementation of the decisions taken during the emergency meeting convened by the governor.
