Former Head of Service Adamu Fika Is Dead
The funeral prayers will hold on Wednesday October 25, by 4:00 at Sultan Bello Mosque Kaduna.
Malam Adamu Fika, who held the traditional title of Wazirin Fika, was a renowned and seasoned educationist and administrator.
He was born in 1933 in Fika, Yobe State, and served the nation in various capacities.
He attended Fika Elementary School, 1941-45 ; Borno Middle School, Maiduguri, 1947 for his primary education , Kaduna Government College (now Barewa College, Zaria), 1948 – 1951; Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, 1952-53; Institute of Statisticians, London, UK, 1958; Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, England, August-December, 1969; Royal Institute of Public Administration, University of Manchester, UK, 1978.
Adamu Fika was appointed a Mathematics and Physics Teacher in his alma mater, Barewa College, Zaria in 1956, and thereafter took up moved Government Secondary School, Katsina-Ala, Benue State in 1958.
He was Provincial Inspector of Education and Provincial Education Officer in Zaria in 1960; and Inspector of Education, Adamawa Province in Yola in 1962.
Adamu Fika served as the Principal of Federal Training Centre, Kaduna in 1962; Deputy Secretary, Interim Common Services Agency, 1968-1970, and Secretary of the Agency in 1970.
He was appointed Commissioner of Finance, North- Eastern State in 1972; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1975; Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Commerce, 1979; Permanent Secretary, Public Service Department, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, 1981-1982.
Adamu Fika was also Permanent Secretary, Police Affairs Department in the Office of the President; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, 1982-1984; and Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory and Chief Executive of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Abuja in 1984.
Adamu Fika became the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in 1986, and retired from the Federal Public Service in 1988.
He was subsequently appointed Chairman, National Commission for Colleges of Education, March 1989-1990; Administrative Secretary of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1990; Chairman, United Bank for Africa (Government Appointee), January 1990-March 1993.
He also served as the Clerk and Director General of the National Assembly, 1992-1993; first Chairman of Salaries and Wages Commission, September 1992 – March 1993; and first Chairman, Federal Character Commission, December 1995 – March 2001.
The deceased had also served as the Pro Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria in 2018.
Until his death on Tuesday, Adamu Fika was the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a pan-Northern Nigeria pressure group.
He was a recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in1992, an honourary Doctor of Letters (LLD) from Bayero University Kano.
