Group faults conduct of PDP congresses in Yobe

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State have faulted the conduct of the party’s congresses in the state, claiming violations of the PDP constitution.
The Syndicate reports that the congresses were held from May 8 to 13, in the 17 local government areas of the state.
The state Legal Adviser of the PDP, Barrister Ahmad Idris Waziri, on Friday led some aggrieved party members to protest the conduct and outcome of the congresses.
Addressing journalists on Friday in Damaturu, Waziri claimed that the process violated PDP’s constitution.
He said, “Today, we deeply voice our dissatisfaction with the recent congresses of our party held from 8th to 13th May 2025 in the state. It is unfortunate and it violated the Peoples Democratic Party constitution.”
According to him, the ward and local government congresses were conducted without adherence to the party’s guidelines, thereby undermining internal democracy.
“The PDP constitution mandates inclusivity and strict compliance with procedures at all levels—national, zonal, state, and grassroots. The word shall in our constitution is binding, yet these congresses disregarded these provisions,” Waziri added.
He warned that the irregularities could weaken the party’s credibility ahead of the 2027 elections, which he described as a pivotal contest for Nigeria’s future.
While condemning the alleged flawed process, Waziri urged that immediate corrective measures be taken.
“If this was due to ignorance of the law, it is not too late to rectify it. The PDP must uphold its reputation as a law-abiding institution to regain public trust and strengthen its position for 2027.”
The aggrueved members reaffirmed their commitment to restoring the party’s integrity and ensuring a transparent, united front moving forward.
In his reacting, the outgoing state party chairman, Ambassador Umar El-gash said notice for the congresses were duly communicated to all members through the official platforms of the party, as they usually do.
He however said all the aggrieved members have the constitutional right to appeal to the appropriate channel as enshrined in the party’s constitution.
