Gynecologist calls for improved antenatal care to prevent Obstetric Fistula

A consultant Gynecologist at the Yobe state University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Aisha Buba, has called for improved access to antenatal care and family planning services to prevent obstetric fistula.
Obstetric fistula also known as vesicovaginal fuslua (VVF) is a condition where an abnormal opening develops between the bladder and the vagina, causing urine leak.
It is a significant problem, particularly in areas with limited access to healthcare, where prolonged or obstructed labour during childbirth is a major cause.
Dr Aisha said during a media briefing in Damaturu to mark the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, that the condition can also occur during cesarean sections
She described obstetric fistula as a devastating childbirth injury that can be prevented with proper medical services.
“Fistula can also occur during cesarean sections or instrument-assisted deliveries, but the leading cause remains obstructed labour,” the consultant emphasised.
She acknowledged the consistent support being provided by Yobe State Government for the fistula repair surgeries, which have restored the dignity of hundreds of affected women.
“Many women have undergone successful operations here. Our facility has benefited from repeated U.S.-sponsored fistula repair campaigns. In each outreach, no fewer than 100 women are treated, and the recovery rate is very encouraging.” she added.
Aisha emphasized that family planning plays a crucial role in preventing maternal complications, including fistula.
“Contraception helps prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduces maternal risks. Antenatal care is equally important as it allows early identification and management of women at risk of prolonged or obstructed labour.” she noted.
She urged pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics regularly and deliver in health facilities so as to get proper attention from skilled health providers.
The consultant appealed to stakeholders and development partners to raise public awareness on fistula prevention, and strengthen maternal healthcare services to eliminate obstetric fistula in Nigeria
“With collective efforts, we can end this preventable condition and protect women’s health and dignity,” she stressed.
