Jigawa Increases Revenue By Over 300 Percent – Chairman

The Chairman of Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), Dr Nasir Sabo, has said that the state’s internally generated revenue rose by over 300 percent in September.
The Chairman disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Syndicate in Dutse, the state capital.
He said this followed some new innovations put in place by the service, which led to rise in revenue collection from N1.2 billion monthly to over N4.2 billion in September.
“I’m happy to inform you that we recorded a remarkable improvement in the history of local revenue generations in Jigawa, as the state had it’s collections from N1.2 billion in August to N4.2 billion in the month of September 2024”.
“The growth of IGR in the state was achieved as a result of new innovations and policies introduced by the service team and adopted by the present administration under the leadership of Malam Umar Namadi,” he said.
The executive chairman explained the new policies to include digitisation of the revenue collection process, which include the introduction of digital registration of tax collection to block leakages.
Dr Sabo maintained that the milestone was also a Memorandum of Understanding on tax collection the service signed with the 27 local government areas of the state.
He also said more revenue from taxes on contracts was recorded in September because of number of contracts awarded by the state government.
Dr Sabo added that the service had adopted a massive enlightenment campaign on how to pay tax and how it is important to government in provision of infrastructure in the communities.
“We signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the state and 27 local government on revenue collection process, we also initiated a partnership with some revenue collection agencies on areas like strategic IGR Growth and development initiatives, deployment of technology to eliminate tax avoidance in Jigawa state, introducing relevant software to track net-worth Individuals, capacity building of JIRS staff on the aspects of tax evasion, anti money laundering, counter terrorism financing and exchange of information and technology resources, as well as taxation of informal sectors, among others”, the chairman said.
He commended Governor Namadi for his support to the JIRS and urged the general public to cooperate with the service to ensure better revenue collection for the development of the state.
