Jigawa LGAs Are Fully Financially Autonomous – Speaker

The Speaker of Jigawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin says the legal tussle between the federal and state governments before the Supreme Court over the automy of local government councils will not have any adverse effect on governance in the state.
“The local government councils in the state are already financially autonomous, ” the Speaker told newsmen while reviewing the assembly’s performance in the last one year.
According to him, Governor Umar Namadi is not taking any Kobo from the funds of the local government councils.
“Every local council is receiving it’s full allocation monthly,” he added.
Dangyatin said that the state assembly has also been making laws to ensure accountability in the operations of the local councils.
“As it is our constitutional responsibility to legislate on local government councils’ administration and finance, we are making efforts to ensure accountability and transparency at the local government councils.”
The Speaker said the House of Assembly has passed 19 laws and 27 resolutions in its first legislative year.
He added that the assembly, within the period under review, had promoted synergy with the executive, judiciary and the media as it strives to improve the socio-economic status of citizens and ensure sustainable democratic development.
Dangyatin added that the assembly had conducted series of oversights to ensure accountability in the running of government finances.
“The resolutions and laws we passed had paved ways and supported the governance reform embarked by Governor Malam Umar Namadi through his 12 point agenda designed to make Jigawa prosperous and great.
“Some of the laws we passed in the last one years included the law for the establishment of State Polytechnic of Information and Technology Kazaure; Basic Health Insurance Scheme; Senior Secondary Schools Board.
“We also passed laws for State Economic Empowerment and Youth Employment Agency; State Bureau of Statistics Amendment Law; Economic Planning Board Amendment Law; State House of Assembly Service Commission Law and Revised Local Government Appropriation Law and State Appropriation Law.
“Others are the Primary Health Development Agency Amendment Law; Jigawa State Contributory Health Care Management Agency Law; State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency Law; State Resident Identity Management Agency Law.”
The speaker assured that the assembly remained committed to the diligent discharge of its responsibility to ensure peace, unity and progress of Jigawa state.
