Kano Govt to relocate inmates from Kurmawa to Janguza Correctional Centre
The Kano State Government says it is working on plans to relocate all inmates at the 100-year-old Kurumawa Correctional Centre to the newly built Janguza Correctional Centre on the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Highway.
The Special Adviser to Gov. Abba Yusuf on Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Adam, stated this in a post on his verified Facebook page.
Adam said that the colonial Correctional Centre would be converted into a museum by the government.
He said that the Kurmawa prison was built in 1910 by the British colonial government within the precinct of emir’s palace and was designed to hold 690 inmates, but had over the past 115 years become one of the most notable symbols of colonial and correctional history in the state.
Adam added that the Janguza facility built by the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari near the military Barracks had the capacity to accommodate 3,000-inmates.
“Kano State government under the leadeship of Gov. Abba Yusuf will transfer all inmates currently at the Kurmawa Correctional Center to Janguza, while the Kurmawa Correctional Center will be transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving historical artifacts and promoting the rich culture of the State.
“The prison to palace of history is expected to serve educational and tourism purposes among centres within and around the ancient city of Kano.
“We want to preserve our heritage and at the same time provide a more decent and secure environment for inmates,” he said.
