Kano secures N177.4bn French loan for water project
The Kano State government has secured a N177.4 billion loan facility from the French Development Agency to construct new waterworks at Tamburawa to improve water distribution in the state.
Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, said this during a two-day project coordination and review workshop in Kano, which was attended by representatives from Plateau, Enugu, and Ondo states in Kano on Thursday.
Yusuf, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ali Makoda, said that the project was aimed at enhancing access to drinkable water in response to the state’s rapid population growth.
He said the project would be carried out under the National Urban Water Reform Project and is guaranteed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
Yusuf emphasised the importance of the project, which had faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, but is now on track to be completed within the next two years.
Malam Garba Bichi, the Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board said that the project included the construction of an additional water intake station with a capacity of 250 million litres per day, which would significantly address water shortages in the city amid its growing population.
