Some Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, elders in Kogi State have described Senator Dino Melaye as a liability to the party and called for his suspension.
The PDP elders led by Ibrahim Dansofo, urged the local executive committee in Ijumu to initiate the immediate suspension proceedings against Melaye in order to restore the party’s integrity.
The move by the elders followed Saturday’s tirade by Melaye against the PDP acting national chairman, Iliya Damagum, Samuel Anyanwu and Umar Bature, whom he said, have destroyed the party.
Melaye claimed that the three chieftains had irredeemably destroyed PDP.
Condemning his remark, the party elders said Melaye’s political ambitions have crumbled to the point where he can no longer secure a local councillor position.
The Dansofo-led elders said Melaye has become a liability, adding that his continued association with the party was only for his personal gains.
“Senator Melaye has become a burden to the party. His accusations against the current leadership are hypocritical, as he himself was granted a governorship ticket despite the party’s awareness of his inability to win even a primary election,” Dansofo said.
They added that PDP’s current struggles in the state was because of the mistake the party made in nominating him as its governorship candidate in the 2023 election.
The elders advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to reevaluate their support for Melaye and distance themselves from him, saying he has become a “bondage” and “big-time liability” for the party.
They urged Nigerians to disregard Melaye’s remarks, labelling them as the desperate words of a man whose political relevance has long since faded.
“The Kogi PDP is determined to move forward, reclaim its strength and rebuild its reputation as a formidable political force in the state, the stakeholders ask Dino Melaye to account for billions he collected in the name of governorship election,” they added.
