Kwankwaso not a terrorism financier; allegations baseless, politically motivated- COSEYL.
The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex sociopolitical youth group in the South East, has strongly condemned the recent attempts to portray Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso as a progenitor and sponsor of religious extremism and Christian persecution in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed and issued by Comrade Goodluck Ibem, the President-General, COSEYL on Friday.
“We categorically state that such allegations are false, politically motivated, and designed to undermine his growing political influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Senator Kwankwaso’s public record speaks for itself. During his tenure as Governor of Kano State, he demonstrated firm commitment to protecting all Nigerians irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
“Christians and other non-Muslims living and conducting lawful businesses in Kano State under his administration enjoyed security, freedom of worship, and constitutional protections guaranteed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Ibem said.
He added that Kwankwaso did not sponsor or support any bill promoting religious extremism or intolerance while at the Senate.
“Furthermore, during his time in the Senate, Senator Kwankwaso did not sponsor or support any bill promoting religious extremism or intolerance.
“His legislative contributions were focused on national development, education, infrastructure, and policies aimed at improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
“COSEYL views the attempt to label him an extremist as a deliberate smear campaign aimed at weakening opposition forces and distorting public perception. It is deeply concerning that unsubstantiated narratives are being weaponized for political purposes.
“Senator Kwankwaso remains a respected national figure whose political appeal and statesmanship cut across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. His leadership has consistently emphasized unity, inclusiveness, and national cohesion,” he said.
Ibem cautioned Nigerians against promoting divisive and unfounded allegations on individuals.
“We therefore call on all relevant stakeholders to desist from promoting divisive and unfounded allegations. Political competition must be based on issues, track records, and vision for the country—not on falsehoods capable of inflaming religious or ethnic tensions.
“Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by propaganda. We urge fairness, due process, and responsible engagement in matters affecting the reputation of public figures and the unity of our nation,” he said.
