Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, says the Police Academy in Wudil must embark on a
journey of transformation and innovation in the training of Cadets to enable them take the mantle of community policing.
He said during a meeting with the management of the academy on Monday in Wudil that practical strategies must be adopted to enhance the effectiveness of the Cadets.
“As we thrive to produce well-disciplined and professionally sound Police Cadets, it is imperative that we collectively embark on a journey of transformation and innovation in our approach,” he said.
Geidam said this should include enhancing training and education; mentorship and guidance, ethics and professionalism, physical and wellness programmes, and community engagement and practical experience.
According to him, improving Cadets’ performance will shape the future of law enforcement in Nigeria.
“The task is not easy but a noble one, but by implementing these strategies and working together as a team, you can shape the future leaders of law enforcement in the country.
“This will prepare the Cadets to uphold the values of justice, integrity and service to humanity.
“As members of the Nigeria Police Academy, you are not only educators but also mentors to the future leaders of our Police Force. Your guidance, wisdom and experience will have a lasting impact on the Cadets under your care,” he added.
Gaidam therefore tasked the school management to embrace this role with all sense of responsibility and dedication, adding that the future of the Police Force depends on the values and skills imparted to the Cadets.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the effort of the management led by the Commandant, AIG Sadiq Abubakar, for turning round the institution.
“So far so good, I am very pleased with the level of academic and training of young police officers in our institution.
“We will continue to support the management to enable the institution produce well trained police officers to compliment the efforts of the Federal Government in the promotion of peace, progress and political stability in our father land,” the minister said.
Earlier, the Commandant said that the institution was doing well in realising its objectives and would vigorously pursue policies focused on making it one of the best police training institution in Africa.
Abubakar added that the management has been “repositioning it to take the lead in innovative practices, research, training, modern policing and quality education”.
The Commandant, however, identified shortage of academic and directing staff, inadequate staff quarters, science and language laboratories, and non completion of major projects as some of the challenges facing the institution.
