NADCEL 2025: Army Engages Public, Students in Yobe on Diverse Career Opportunities

As part of activities marking this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), the Nigerian Army held a public engagement session to educate the public and students on the institution’s history, enlistment requirements, and diverse career opportunities.
The session, held at Government Girls Unity Secondary School, Damaturu—along with other selected secondary schools—aligned with the Army’s broader outreach efforts during NADCEL, commemorated annually on July 6.
The day serves as both a celebration of operational successes and a solemn remembrance of fallen heroes who paid the supreme price defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
In his address, Lt. Col. M.A. Saleh traced the roots of the Nigerian Army to the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF), formed in 1900.
“However, its foundation can be linked to the recruitment of seven Hausa constables in 1863 by colonial officer Lt. J.H. Glover,” he stated.
“These early forces evolved into a powerful military structure that actively participated in World Wars I and II under British command. Following Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and its transition to a republic in 1963, the Nigerian Military Forces were renamed the Nigerian Army.”
“The Army played a pivotal role in national unity during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) and continues to adapt to the nation’s evolving security and developmental needs.”
The event also provided detailed guidance on entry pathways into the Army. Candidates who have completed secondary school must meet the following requirements: be Nigerian by birth, be aged 18–22 (non-trades) or 18–26 (trades), be physically, mentally, and psychologically fit.
Others including must to meet the minimum height requirement: 1.65m for males and 1.56m for females and have no criminal record.
Lt. Col. Saleh added that the Nigerian Army offers a wide array of professional development opportunities across over 20 specialized corps.
“Personnel can grow to the peak of their careers in fields such as medicine, law, engineering, ICT, religious ministry, and skilled trades,” he said.
He encouraged students to consider careers in the Army, describing it as a noble profession that not only safeguards the nation but also builds character, leadership, and lifelong opportunities.
