Nationwide Blackout As National Grid Collapses
Nigeria has been thrown into total blackout following grid collapse on Friday, data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has indicated.
According to the independent system operator, power generation has dropped to zero megawatt (MW), as such load allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) has also been flat at zero level as at 1 pm on Friday.
The distribution companies, including Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola, recorded zero allocation.
Grid collapse in Nigeria is a normal occurrence, and this is the first in 2026.
The National Grid in Nigeria collapsed four times in 2025, with incidents occurring on February 12, March 7, September 10, and December 29.
These collapses have significant impacts on businesses and households, highlighting the country’s ongoing power sector challenges.
