Nguru Local Government football team has won the maiden KMT Unity Cup football tournament, defeating Potiskum LG team 5-1 in a thrilling final at the Miyatti Sport Arena in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The tournament was initiated by a development activist, Barrister Kashim Musa Tumsah.

The Nguru LG team went home with the trophy and a cash reward of ₦500,000 while the runner-up got ₦300,000.

Four other teams that participated in the tournament received a consolation reward of ₦100,000 each.

Hassan Bomai Joda, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), said the competition has achieved the purpose of bringing together youths from the three senatorial zones in the state.

He said that the KMT Unity Cup football competition was initiated “for the purpose of unity, especially among our youth. We are committed to the unity of this state.”

Joda said they drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s use of sports to unite South Africans. “Football is the glue that holds people together. Let’s use it to unite the youth of this state.

The LOC chairman said their target is to unite the youth for the development of the state. “Division leads to underdevelopment. Unity is the foundation of progress and a significant step toward fostering solidarity and development through sports, with even bigger plans on the horizon.”

According to him, going forward, the competition will be expanded “into a larger-scale tournament spanning grassroots, local, and zonal levels”.
