No cholera outbreak in Jigawa, says Health Commissioner

The Jigawa state Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdullahi Kainuwa said the ministry has mounted statewide surveillance to track and control any case of cholera.

The commissioner made the disclosure while responding to questions from newsmen on the state’s preparedness following the outbreak of cholera in some states in the country.

Abdullahi explained that the state government through the ministry had also embarked on massive public enlightenment to heighten prevention and avoid the spread of the disease into the state.

“So far there is no report of an outbreak of the disease. As I’m talking to you now, there is no report no any symptoms of the disease in any part of this state,” he said.

He said that the government had taken preemptive measures based on its experiences in the past on cholera outbreak mostly at the onset of the rainy season.

According to him, as a result of the concerted efforts of the government, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency and other partners, the usual occurrence of the disease has been put under control in the last two years.

“As such, currently there is no single report of cholera in the state; in spite of that, we have activated the state disease surveillance mechanism across 287 political ward in the 27 local government area of the state.

“We have also embarked on public campaign and awareness on the measures needed to be taken by communities, particularly on personal and environmental hygiene, and avoiding drinking unclean water.

“We are calling on communities to report any broken public water facility to nearest officials for immediate repair, to ensure availability of clean water in all our communities.

“For now, there is no report of cholera outbreak in the state, and we are taking necessary measures to forestall any possible outbreak of the disease,” the commissioner said.
