Presidential system unimaginably costly – Dantata
A business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, has backed moves for the adoption of parliamentary system of government by some members of the National Assembly, saying it will be the best thing that will happen to the country in recent times.
Dantata who received the legislators when they paid him a courtesy visit in Kano, said that the presidential system of government has not benefited the country in any way.
“The current presidential system the country is operating is unmanageable and costly, hence the need for change.
“Nigeria has suffered enough operating the presidential system, the nation has suffered enough, nothing seems working. Things are not working, the country is stagnant and the citizens are not enjoying anything out of it.
“So there should be a serious moves to adopt the parliamentary system so that Nigeria would be great again,” the elder statesman added.
Dantata, who was a parliamentarian in the first republic, cautioned those championing the return to parliamentary system of government not to allow personal ambition to kill the agitation.
Leader of the delegation, Rep. Kingsley Chinda from Rivers State, said the presidential system has made governance costlier and cumbersome in Nigeria, thus the need to adopt the parliamentary system which allows true representation of all segments of the society in governance.
”The nation cannot continue to be robbed of it’s wealth under the guise of presidential system of government.
“Under parliamentary system, even the Prime Minister and Governors would be chosen from the parliament and any attempt by them to go astray would be tackled easily by the members,” Chinda said.
He therefore urged Nigerians and the media to support the move, ”because Nigerians would at the end be the greatest beneficiaries”.
