Protest: Jigawa Halts Distribution Of 3m Mosquito Nets

The Jigawa state government has shifted the commencement of the distribution of over three million Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) to citizens by over a week.
The Syndicate reports that the distribution of free Mosquito nets was initially to begin on August 9, but now shifted to August 17, 2024.
The Commissioner of Health, Dr Abdullahi Kainuwa made this known in Dutse during the review meeting of the state Malaria Consortium Programme.
The commissioner, who was represented by Dr Mahmud Abdulwahab, said the adjustment of the date followed the nationwide protest which affected the plans and logistics arrangements for the ITNs disbursement.
“The shifting of the flagging off date is considered as a result of security advice, it is now rescheduled to August 17, instead of 9th August as earlier scheduled,” he added.
According to him, 7.4 million families across the state are expected to receive the Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets.
The commissioner said, “as part of the distribution process, over 1.3 million people have so far collected the ITNs distribution cards which are to be used for the nets collection after the flag off of the exercise.”
Dr Abdullahi disclosed that over 1.4 million children under five years have been administered with the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) drugs in the just concluded malaria prevention exercise in Jigawa state.
“A total of 1, 415, 438 have been administered with the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) in 27 local government areas of the state.
“The eligible children for the drugs is 1,446,533 across the state. A total of 1,415,438 have received, which is a huge success.
“There will be four rounds of the exercise this year, designed to hold in July, August, September and October,” he added.
The children who received the malaria prevention drugs were from 1,633,622 households in the state.
