Senator, NNPP fault Gov. Yusuf’s planned defection to APC
Sen. Rufai Hanga (NNPP-Kano) has faulted Gov. Abba Yusuf planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Hanga, who represents Kano Central at the National Assembly, stated this in a statement on Monday in Kano.
He said that the planned defection was a betrayal of trust on Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the NNPP.
The senator said the defection also amounted to betrayal of trust on the electorate who elected the governor on the banner of the NNPP and advised him to move to the APC alone without trying to involve other elected officials in the state.
Also the Kano State Chapter of the NNPP on Monday distanced itself from the planned defection to the APC, describing the move as a betrayal of the party’s principles.
Addressing a press conference on Monday in Kano, the State NNPP Chairman, Mr Hashim Dungurawa, emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to its national leader and Kwankwasiyya movement founder, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.Nigerian product marketplace
Dungurawa labeled the governor’s alleged alignment with the APC as unacceptable, urging him to uphold the party’s integrity and abandon any plans to switch sides.
He also cautioned party leaders and members against endorsing or signing any related documents circulated at the Government House.
Speaking on behalf of the state and national NNPP structures, as well as supporters from groups like CRC, Lafiya Jari, Kano Propa, and Kwankwasiyya, including youths, women, and citizens, Dungurawa acknowledged awareness of efforts by some individuals to defect to the APC.
He said that party leaders, including Kwankwaso, had exhausted efforts to dissuade those involved, stressing the NNPP’s duty to the people of Kano.
“We do not approve of what is happening.
“We appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to leave this party and not to defect to the one we have opposed and which the masses have rejected,” he said.
He called on defectors to stay and contribute to improving education, agriculture, commerce, and other sectors, in line with the party’s constitution.
Dungurawa urged members to ignore circulating documents from “mischief-makers” and rallied support for the NNPP and Kwankwaso ahead of future elections.
The statement came amid intense speculation that the governor had concluded plans to join the APC potentially with a majority of state lawmakers while Kwankwaso would remain in the NNPP.
